An after-show discussion in association with Lifting The Lid and including Manchester-based historian Washington Alcott.
Thurs 19th July 2012
RNCM (Royal Northern College of Music), 124 Oxford Road, Manchester M13 9RD.
The musical piece ‘Songs of the Caged Bird’ is a new song-cycle by Manchester composer-pianist George King, written for arguably Manchester’s finest jazz diva, Doreen Edwards, and the chamber strings of Manchester Camerata. It sets poems, speeches and historic sermons connected to the civil rights period in African-American culture in the form of a song-cycle.
The critical historian Washington Alcott from Lifting The Lid will join the panel discussion after the show and discuss the ways in which this jazz piece resonates with the racialised past in the USA, and what it means for us in the UK today.
