A lively and provocative discussion session about the roots of jazz – what resonance does it still have today for the issues which shaped its emergence – namely Black consciousness? – what exactly is its relevance today for both players and audiences from a multitude of backgrounds across the globe? Led by Kooj Chuhan and Frankie Mullen from Lifting The Lid, a new organisation undertaking progressive educational activities, events and processes in a variety of environments. Panel members will include Chris Searle, author of “Forward Groove: Jazz and the Real World from Louis Armstrong to Gilad Atzmon”; Serge Tebu, exiled pianist from Cameroon now based in Manchester; Kevin Davy, UK-born black British trumpeter and composer; Adam Fairhall, creator of this year’s mjf originals commission The Imaginary Delta, and others.
